Am I missing something? Both Figure 1 & 2 appear to be the same to me?

Thanks for your comment, Keith. Brian also tells us that one of the aspects of western culture that we need to challenge is anthropocentrism. And I would like to start by challenging the title of my post. It should read: "We are not the only weavers" as I say in my post (rather than we are not only the weavers). Brian also challenged artists like myself to begin to create stories/songs/images of the "heroes" in the plant world. I have been having a ball with this one, extolling in song not only friendly bacteria and mitochondria, but temnospondyls (the ancestor of the modern frog, who gave us the ear) and amphioxus (who gave us the first spine). These songs are on my new CD, Deep Fun: Songs about Science, Food and Sex. How about phytoplankton? Now there's a real hero! Pauline

If everyone on earth consumed like North Americans it would take 5 earths to support us. Obviously we have to find another way. Amazingly enough, according to the Food & Agricultural Association of the UN, what we eat contributes more to global warming than all of transportation. Livestock production contributes 18% of global warming gasses vs 12% for all transportation combined. Reducing or eliminating our use of animal products is more effective than driving Priuses, much cheaper, and has great effects on our health, a win win all around. When we eat meat we consume at least 10 times as much grain as we would if we ate the grain directly. Meanwhile 20,000 children a day starve to death. Marge and I went vegan 18 years ago and I'm so happy we did that. I feel like we eat like royalty, dining on plants, most of which are locally grown and organic. Our health is better than it was 20 years ago and we don't contribute to the suffering and death of 9 billion animals killed for food in the US every years. This feels good. (We also drive Priuses.)

We also participate in a spiritual community, a Buddhist Sangha in the Plum Villiage Tradition of Thich Nhat Hanh, that makes it very clear that joy, happiness and peace, don't come from more stuff. Learning, contemplation, walks in nature, the company of friends also dedicated to transforming our relationship to ourselves, each other and the biosphere of which we are a strand, all bring deep, lasting satisfaction.

It is wonderful to be on the path to a flourishing world with all of you.

Thank you for listening.

Hello Pauline,

I love everything you said. It reminds me of Brian Swimme and Thomas Berry saying, the beings of the world, plant, animal and mineral, are not objects for our use but beings we are privileged to commune with. It's all about how we participate in and create the beloved community.
